Glycobalance ingredients

One mineral with a number beside it, and twenty-two names inside a blend that is declared as a single total. Here is the whole list.

The panel declares two things. A mineral, with an amount. And a blend, with a total and twenty-two names underneath it.

The mineral is chromium, seven micrograms of it, in the picolinate form, at twenty percent of the daily value. That single line is the only place on the whole label where an individual ingredient has a number of its own.

Everything else sits inside the proprietary blend, which weighs 15.47 mg per serving. Underneath that total the manufacturer prints the names in descending order of weight, and that ordering is the entire breakdown anyone outside the factory has. This page reproduces the list in exactly that order.

Six with pictures

Six Glycobalance extracts in more detail

Photographs exist for these six. That is the only reason they are the six.

Chromium Picolinate, one of the extracts named on the Glycobalance label
Mineral

Chromium Picolinate

The one item on the panel with a number beside it: 7 mcg a serving, which the label puts at 20 percent of the daily value. Chromium is an essential trace mineral, meaning the body cannot make it and has to take it in from food. Picolinate is simply the form it is bound to here.

Gymnema Sylvestre, one of the extracts named on the Glycobalance label
Leaf

Gymnema Sylvestre

Gymnema sylvestre

A climbing shrub from the forests of central and southern India. Chewing the leaf has a curious effect that gave the plant its Hindi name, gurmar: for a short while afterwards sweetness is hard to taste. It has been used in Ayurvedic practice for a very long time and sits eighth in the blend as printed.

African Mango Seed, one of the extracts named on the Glycobalance label
Seed

African Mango Seed

Irvingia gabonensis

The seed of a West African forest tree, ground into a meal called dika in Cameroon and Nigeria and used there as a thickener for soups and stews long before anyone bottled it. The label lists it as a 10:1 concentrate, one of only two items given that ratio.

Green Tea Leaf, one of the extracts named on the Glycobalance label
Leaf

Green Tea Leaf

Camellia sinensis

The same leaf as the tea in the cupboard, picked and steamed rather than oxidised, which is the whole difference between green tea and black. It is among the most studied plants in the world and appears here as a 20:1 concentrate.

Maca Root, one of the extracts named on the Glycobalance label
Root

Maca Root

Lepidium meyenii

A hardy root vegetable grown on the high plateau of the Peruvian Andes, above four thousand metres, where very little else will grow. It is eaten as a food there, dried and milled into flour. Maca is printed first in the blend.

Panax Ginseng Root, one of the extracts named on the Glycobalance label
Root

Panax Ginseng Root

Panax ginseng

The Korean and north-eastern Chinese ginseng, distinct from American and Siberian plants that share the common name. Panax comes from the Greek for all-healing, a name given by a botanist rather than by anyone testing it, and the root has been traded across Asia for centuries.

Why no milligram figure appears beside any of these

Everything except the chromium sits inside a proprietary blend, and a proprietary blend is declared as one total. The label gives that total as 15.47 mg and then lists twenty-two names in descending order of weight. The split between them belongs to the manufacturer and has not been published, so this site does not invent one. What the order does tell you is that maca is the largest item and L-carnitine HCL the smallest. The full list is on the ingredients page and the panel itself is reproduced on the supplement facts page.

What this tall graphic is

The seller supplies it and we reproduce it whole. It sets out a claimed mechanism beside each featured ingredient, in the confident voice that marketing material tends to use.

Treat every one of those mechanism lines as a claim rather than as a finding. None of them is on the bottle, none of them has a study attached here, and a dietary supplement may not make a claim of that kind about a disease at all. The panel, by contrast, makes no mechanism claim whatsoever. It gives two amounts and twenty-two names, and that is the document we have written this site from.

Questions

Glycobalance ingredient questions

Are all twenty-two really in there?

They are all printed on the panel, which is a legal declaration rather than a marketing list. What is not printed is how much of each, because the manufacturer declares them as one blend.

Which one is there the most of?

Maca root extract. Supplement labels list the contents of a blend in descending order of weight, so first on the list is heaviest and L-carnitine HCL, printed last, is lightest.

Is there caffeine in it?

Green tea leaf and guarana seed both occur naturally with caffeine, and both are in the blend. No caffeine figure is declared, and the blend totals 15.47 mg in all, so any amount present is small. If you are sensitive to it, ask the seller before ordering.
